ACBTA Meet the Expert Talk - Management of Vaginismus Using Cognitive Behavioral Approach by Prof Firdaus Mukhtar
Synopsis:
Cognitive Behavior Therapy is an evidence-based interventions for various psychiatric disorders, including genito-pelvic pain/penetration disorder (aka vaginismus). It has been long practiced that most vaginismus cases are seen by medical professionals (gynecologist and psychiatrist) and physiotherapists. Clinical psychologists do not typically receive this training to treat vaginismus, and this may be a reason that patients do not get holistic treatment in managing vaginismus. In this presentation, Prof Firdaus explains how the cognitive theory plays an important role in the treatment of vaginismus with core Cognitive Behavior Therapy skills that are commonly used in its management. Several cases will be discussed to illustrate the application of CBT, including points to be taken into consideration in the cross-cultural context.
